Reframe Procrastination: It's Not Laziness
Procrastination is an emotion-management problem, not a time one. The research — and the two-minute fix.
The real cause
Studies by Tim Pychyl show procrastination correlates with how you feel about a task, not the task's importance. We avoid tasks that trigger negative emotion — boredom, anxiety, frustration, self-doubt.
The fix isn't discipline
Willpower is a weak lever against emotion. Instead, change how the task feels:
- Shrink it. "Write the report" triggers dread. "Open the doc and write the title" triggers nothing. Start there.
- Lower the bar. Give yourself permission to produce garbage on the first pass. You can't edit a blank page.
- Pair it with a carrot. Work on the dreaded task during your first GrindForge sprint of the day, when your willpower is highest and a fresh XP reward is waiting.
The two-minute rule
If a task takes under two minutes, do it now. It removes the tiny mental tax of carrying it as an open loop — and open loops, compounded, are what make a to-do list feel crushing.
